Lucas: age 2

Lucas was admitted into our foster care program last year. He was a medically fragile one-year old diagnosed with cerebral palsy. Under father’s name on Lucas’ birth certificate, it simply reads “name refused” because Lucas’ mother would not reveal his name. Lucas’ mother struggled with substance abuse and domestic violence. When Lucas moved into our foster home, he had a feeding tube, started into space and was nonresponsive to those around him. Nursing services were provided to the foster family and both our staff and foster parents were trained to help Lucas with his feeding tube and other medical needs.

The foster parents changed their work schedules to meet the boy’s many medical needs as Lucas was frequently feverish and had respiratory problems. The daycare center he had been attending was dark and not very attentive. We quickly transferred him into our Family and Child Development Center. Within one week Lucas seemed healthier, and his fever and respiratory issues improved. Within two months, this young child was making eye contact frequently, starting to respond to voices and began to smile. Within four months, Lucas began to eat solid food and at seven months in the program was able to say “good boy,” a phrase his foster father said to him often.

A few months ago, Lucas’ biological father was located. The man had never been told that he had a son. Lucas’ father had a stable family of his own, and his entire family stepped forward to support the little boy. Lucas was introduced to his father who wept the first time he met him because he saw how much his son looked like him. Today, Lucas continues to receive day care service through Barium Springs and Lucas’ new family keeps in close contact with the foster parents and Barium Springs staff.
