When I first started living at Barium Springs, I was very angry. I felt like no one wanted me and at times my thoughts turned to suicide. Now, I no longer feel unwanted. The staff at Barium Springs have showed me that there are people in this world who care for me.
Susan: age 17

This is Susan.  She is seventeen years old and has been living in a North Carolina state facility since she was twelve, due to her father and sole caregiver getting himself arrested for drug trafficking.

Susan came to Barium Springs because the state of North Carolina is going through a reorganization of its mental health services program – asking private organizations like Barium Springs to take over care of these children.  Susan has a very deep distrust of adults; she is defiant and argumentative with her caregivers, teachers and peers.  The closer Susan gets to her eighteenth birthday, the more fearful she becomes of what the future might hold for her.  She will have no one to fall back on as she struggles to enter the adult world of work and independent living.  As Susan gets her anger and emotional outbursts under control, she will move to one of the Level II residential homes at Barium Springs.

After a successful stay in a Level II home, Susan will be ready for the Independent Living Program at Barium Springs, where she will live in her own apartment on campus with a caregiver close by to help her with job interviews, college applications, bill paying, grocery shopping and other adult living skills.
