When I first got to Barium Springs I hated it. I ran away a lot and fought with my Family Teachers. Since I have been here they have taught me that they care about me. Before I came here, I did not feel like anyone wanted me.
Scott: age 9
This is Scott. He is only nine years old and already has lived in more than fourteen foster homes.Scott’s parents abandoned him before his first birthday and while his grandparents made a valiant attempt to take care of Scott, their own health issues prevented them from being a strong parenting force in his life.
Scott is often defiant and morose, going days without speaking. At school, he ignores his teachers and peers, drifting off into his own world during class.Scott should be in fourth grade, but is still struggling with third grade reading, writing and arithmetic. When Scott does talk, it is often through temper tantrums and outbursts of anger. At Barium Springs Scott learns to control his anger and talk more openly about his feelings. While attending the SpringsAcademy here on campus Scott’s teachers are able to help him catch up with other children his age so that he can one day rejoin his peers in school on an equal level. So far, Scott is making tremendous progress in school as well as in our Teaching-Family group home.Scott is beginning to make friends and show a real interest in excelling in his schoolwork.
Reunification with his family isn’t an option for Scott; for now he will live on campus at Barium Springs until he can be placed into a stable foster home or he can be adopted by a loving family.
