Admissions & referrals

Referrals for services at Barium Springs Home for Children (BSHC) are accepted from anyone. Children and families may be referred by themselves, departments of social services, mental health providers, pastors, educators, juvenile services, or other family members.

The process is begun as simply an email or a phone call contacting the Intake Assistant. She will assist you with a brief screening, and set up initial contact for you with a BSHC Community Support worker, and make appointments for you with any appropriate clinical staff. Contact information for intake is listed at the bottom of the page.

After your initial call or email, a BSHC Community Support worker will be in contact with you right away. The Community Support worker and the entire family will hold an initial inquiry interview, and a strength-based assessment will be conducted with the family with appropriate clinical staff.

The decision on the most effective services for your child to receive is made by the clinical team, after meeting with your family and your child. A plan of service is then prepared stating the purpose of the service based on the family issues, including goals and strategies necessary to help the child and family.

Costs of service may be covered by Medicaid, NC Healthchoice and other state funding for which a family is eligible. With mental health payment for treatment costs, families are required to make application for SSI benefits and to provide these funds to BSHC. If families are not eligible for SSI, they may be asked to pay for room and board costs.DSS and other social service custodians will pay based on a pre-established purchase of service charge contracted through BSHC. Private pay client are charged on a sliding fee scale based on income for parent or relative custodians. Our financial director works on a family-by-family basis to establish the fee scale, based on individual family financial circumstances.

The NC Application for Admission required by the State is available to download and fax to our Intake area, if you would like to complete it prior to your appointment. This state form must be completed only by the custodial parent(s) or legal custodian, who is also a legal resident of North Carolina.

If you feel Barium Springs Home for Children can help your family, please call or email us now. A specially trained staff member will be in touch with you as soon as possible (within one working day of receipt) of your email.
